Thunderbolt was first supposed to be a connection that only took place using light, a so called optical connection, but there were too many problems with it and it was too expensive, so Apple and Intel decided to start with a normal physical connection, also upgrade it whenever possible, yet thunderbolt can transfer up to 10 Gbit/s each way, and Thunderbolt 2 transfer 20 Gbit/s each way. Thunderbolt started to be called Light Peak and was first shown in 2009.
Thunderbolt is used to transfer data from e.g. a hard drive or a card reader to your hard drive, but Thunderbolt also has a Mini Display port built in, so it can also be used for external displays, this is what Thunderbolt is most frequently used for.
Thunderbolt is very fast if you compare the speed to USB 2.0 at 480 mbit/s, Firewire 800mbit/s, USB 3.0 with 5 Gbit/s is Thunderbolt with 10 Gbit/s x2 and Thunderbolt 2 with 20 Gbit/s x2 superior.
Not only is Thunderbolt fast, Thunderbolt also has some brand new features, Thunderbolt is connected directly to the motherboard and can connect accessories directly to what's called a PCI port, it's such a port your Network Card and graphics card also sits in, it means that Thunderbolt can make accessories that previously had to be internal because otherwise the speed wasn't fast enough, externally. So Thunderbolt can turn your laptop into a desktop, since you can now connect as much accessories as you like without having to open your computer.
There are already Thunderbolt graphics cards, sound cards, network cards and more out, but the price is still too high.
Because Thunderbolt can connect directly to the motherboard, it is possible to make a USB3 hub that, whether the Mac computer has USB3 or not, supports USB3.
Thunderbolt is fully backwardcompatible with everything accessories for Mini Displayport, ie all monitors and other which have this connector can be used in a Mac with Thunderbolt. Mini Displayport, on the other hand, is not preccompatable, so a Thunderbolt display doesn't work on a Mac with Mini Displayport.
A Thunderbolt cable can be at most 3 meters long, 100 meter Thunderbolt cables are released but these are optical.
