What is Zigbee?

The Zigbee protocol is a wireless standard that utilizes mesh technology in the communication between connected devices. It distinguishes itself by being highly energy-efficient, resulting in significantly longer battery life for wireless devices compared to those using Wi-Fi. Additionally, mesh technology enables longer range communication as devices interact with each other, thereby amplifying the signal.

The Rise of Zigbee in the Smart Home

Zigbee made its mark in the realm of the Smart Home with the introduction of Philips Hue. This offered a complete, intelligent ecosystem for home lighting, where bulbs, switches, and sensors could communicate with each other and be controlled as desired. Subsequently, other manufacturers recognized the benefits of incorporating Zigbee into their lighting products (such as Ikea Trådfri, Osram Smart+, etc.), and the protocol gradually spread to various other types of devices, including radiator thermostats and smoke alarms.

Can all Zigbee devices be connected to a Hue Bridge or Trådfri Gateway?

Unfortunately, no. Although Zigbee is a standard, it is relatively open. This has the advantage of being easy and cost-effective for manufacturers to implement, but it also means that the implementation can vary from one manufacturer to another. Furthermore, lighting has its own sub-protocol (Zigbee Light Link), which is not directly compatible with the full protocol.

As a result, most manufacturers have developed their own ecosystems, and this is certainly not always advantageous for consumers. One quickly ends up with 3-4 different control boxes, all of which need to be connected to power and a network. Additionally, the advantage of a strong mesh network is lost as the different systems each form their own network. For example, a bulb connected to a Hue Bridge cannot amplify the signal to a PIR sensor on a Xiaomi Gateway.
