Display port is widely used as it is one of the most versatile connections, but your mac does not have a display port, but a Mini Display port, the 2 connectors are almost identical, the Mini display is just smaller.
Mini DisplayPort for Displayport supports resolutions up to 1920x1200 - it's normal 24" display resolution, and unlike HDMI, this Mini DisplayPort for Displayport cable supports the resolution at 60Hz.
