The Mini Display port is a favorite here at Mackabler because it's a standard that makes it easy and fast to find an adapter that can use for what you need it for. And Apple still has the standard because the new Thunderbolt ports in the new iMac's, Macbook pros and Macbook airer can also use all old adapters that use the Mini Display port. Thunderbolt and Mini Display are the same, except that in thunderbolt there is a data connection too, it is not there in the Mini Displayport.
Mini Displayport is one of the best video connectors you can get, it supports up to 4k resolution at full 60 frames/sec, in the latest version called Mini Displayport 1.2, it is also this standard which is built into the Thunderbolt 2 connector. All Mini Display ports are backward-compatible, so your adapter cable will never be obsolete as long as you use a Mac with either the Mini Display or the Thunderbolt connector.
The Mini Display Port also has built-in analog adapters, which means that a simple and inexpensive VGA adapter can easily be made without the need for any electronics to turn the signal from analogue to digital. The Mini Displayport also has both DVI and HDMI built in for the same reason. On the other hand, only up to 1920x1200 these passive adapters work, otherwise you will need an active adapter.
The mini display port that sits in most Macbook, iMac, mac mini and mac pro is of the old Mini Display port 1.1, this only supports up to resolutions of 2560x1600, or 2560x1440, this is what a normal 27" or 30" PC screen is on.
The Mini Display Port is virtually identical to the Display Port, so the cable from Mini Displayport to Displayport transfer the full potential from the connector.
Mini Displayport supports audio if you mac is newer than 2010, Mini Displayport also supported audio before this, but mac from this time did not have the ability to transfer audio through the video jack.
The Mini Displayport has a fun feature that allows you to link multiple monitors together, so you only need to Using a single connector on its mac to connect multiple monitors, this implemented Apple first with their Thunderbolt screens as they have both a Thunderbolt input and a Thunderbolt output, the Mini Displayport versions of the same displays as called cinema display, could have support this feature, one Apple chose it manifest from.
Apple is licensed on the Mini Display port, which means that others can't use the standard unless Apple agrees to it, luckily Apple gives it away for free, to everyone, but reserves the right to take it away again if a manufacturer makes a product that harms Apple.
