A new version of Thunderbolt has arrived. It's called Thunderbolt 2, and is of course backwardcompatible with Thunderbolt 1. And that means Thunderbolt 2 also works with the Mini Displayport connector.
Thunderbolt 2 within holds a 20 GBit/s connection or 2 with 10GBit/s each way. Intel says that Thunderbolt 2 can run a 4k PC screen while transferring a 4k video with the same connection. Thunderbolt 2 within holds Displayport 1.2 and supports a single 4k PC monitor, or 2 1440p screens over the same connector, it obviously requires your mac's graphics card to support it, but so far all Mac's which have Thunderbolt 2 also support 4k displays.
Thunderbolt supports what you call daisy chain, you can put devices together in a chain, to eventually attach them to a Mac - and all the devices work with your Mac. Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt 2 supports daisy chain with up to 6 units per connector.
The difference between Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt 2
Thunderbolt 1 supports a 10GBit/s data connection both ways, while Thunderbolt 2 supports 20Gbit/s both ways, but max 20GBit/s in total.
Thunderbolt 2 has built-in DisplayPort 1.2 while Thunderbolt 1 has only DisplayPort 1.1a. Display port 1.1a supports up to 2560x1600 solution (30" or just over 27" solution) while Display port 1.2 supports up to 3840×2160 (known as 4k and uHD).
The Thunderbolt 1 and 2 connectors are exactly the same.
