This adapter works with all SATA disks, i.e. virtually all disks, for portable PCs, this applies to both new SSDs and old magnetic disks. Be aware that there may be problems with 3.5" hard drives, as USB3 only supports up to 4.5W (simultaneous data transfer) and many 3.5" hard drives cannot run with so little power. But all hard drives on 2.5" (Portable hard drives) and 1.8"(iPod and macbook air hard drives) can run well with this amount of power.

SATA has built-in power, so you don't need any external power to run a hard drive.

At one end of the adapter there is USB3, it is backwardcompatible with USB2, and at the other end there is a SATA2 and is compatible with both SATA1 and SATA3. Below is a review so you can see about what speed you can get out of your disk. 

SATA1 supports at 187 MB/s (1.5 Gbit/s), SATA2 supports up to 375 MB/s (3 Gbit/s) and SATA3 up to 750 MB/s (6 Gbit/s).

USB3 supports 625 MB/s (5 Gbit/s), USB2 supports 60 MB/s (480 MBit/s). 

It is by far most of the time The hard drive is the bottleneck, a normal magnetic hard drive mostly has a maximum speed of about 100 MB/s (800 MBit/s) while SSThere often can handle up to 500 MB/s (4 GBit/s) - the adapter here, from SATA to USB3 is certainly not Bottleneck.

The SATA to USB3 adapter is plugin and play, i.e. it requires no driver, and SATA also supports hot swappable, so you can take a disk out and plug a new one in without having to restart. 

If the plug looks like it in your hard drive, it is definitely the right connector as there is no connector similar to this SATA.
