'Mini Display for HDMI' uses the HDMI standard HDMI 1.3b - this simply means you can use the cable for resolutions above the normal 1080p (1920x1080px) and as easily as 1200p (1920x1200px) - and then you also get audio through the cable. Both ends of the cable are 'he' connectors. The left is a Mini DisplayPort, the right is an HDMI port. The cable is powered by the Mini Display side, so it is passive and not active.
