Most monitors have a DisplayPort connector, and this connector is the one that supports the highest resolution on the vast majority of monitors.
The DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable is made for the large external monitors that often come with DisplayPort, e.g. all new Dell monitors have DisplayPort, and so do most monitors from Lenovo and Eizo.
DisplayPort is widely used as it is one of the most versatile digital connections, but your Mac does not have a DisplayPort output, but a Mini DisplayPort - the 2 connectors are almost identical, the Mini DisplayPort is just smaller.
This plug therefore does not fit in a MacBook, it only fits some Mac Pros. If you must use a connector that fits directly into a Mini DisplayPort/Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 port, you must use the Mini DisplayPort to Displayport cable.
DisplayPort to DisplayPort supports resolutions up to 1920x1200 - that's normal 24" screen resolution, and unlike HDMI, this DisplayPort to Displayport cable supports that resolution at 60Hz.
The DisplayPort to Displayport cable also perfectly supports a 24" screen at 1920x1200p (or 1080p).
