How do I use a SCART cable?
A SCART cable is primarily used to connect to old televisions, from before the advent of HDMI, USB, etc. It is necessary if you have an old B&O, for example, that you would like to connect to your Mac or other multimedia device.
Converting from digital to analog
Since SCART is designed to transmit analog signals, its compatibility is relatively limited to older devices that use the same format. However, Apple has provided the option to convert from digital to analog in their newer ports, so with the right adapters, it is possible.
Converting with SCART to phono and S-video
One way to convert is to use a SCART plug that converts to 3x phono and S-video, and then connect these using cables to a phono and S-video adapter that converts to HDMI, for example.
Using SCART for old consoles
A SCART plug with phono can also be used to connect old consoles such as PlayStations or Xbox. It can be quite enjoyable to turn up the nostalgia and play the various games one used to play as a child.
Benefits of having a SCART plug
It is therefore very practical to have one if you have an old television and would like the option to use it with other devices. It can be quite cool to invite friends over for an old school evening, testing what the old equipment can do.
Watching movies from your Mac
A SCART plug also allows you to watch movies from your Mac in a similar way to a newer television, although the quality will be somewhat poorer due to the limitations of the analog signal.
A must-have for collectors
For collectors of older devices, a SCART plug is especially a must-have, as it would otherwise be very difficult to connect everything as desired. This way, one can keep the collection alive.
