Like so many other Macs, there are certain types of accessories you have to own. As a rule, it's about getting accessories that make multiple devices available for use with your iMac, for example an additional monitor. Everything else is for built-in or wireless accessories.
iMac 27" has 2 Thunderbolt ports. These can be used to connect extra screens, and it doesn't just have to be one of Apple's own though you think so, as it's a Thunderbolt port. The port also fits much cheaper displays than Apple's, you just need the adapters and connectors called 'Mini DisplayPort for...', since Thunderbolt has Mini DisplayPort built into it. to HDMI' you can connect a monitor to, or a TV that doesn't have Thunderbolt itself. Look in the table below for an overview of which iMac 27"s accessories you can use. For example, you can buy a Mini DisplayPort for VGA Adapterif you need to seamlessly connect your iMac to a projector.
