The Magsafe 1 85W charger was originally designed for the MacBook Pro 15 and MacBook Pro 17, but it has the advantage that it can be used to charge all the MacBooks that are charged via a Magsafe 1 charger or via a Magsafe for Magsafe 2- adapter. It can, as the number of watts is automatically adjusted down so that your MacBook receives the correct amount of power during charging.

A Magsafe 1 85W charger can therefore be used for all MacBook Air 11, MacBook Air 13, MacBook, MacBook Pro 13, MacBook Pro 13 Retina, MacBook Pro 15, MacBook Pro 15 Retina and MacBook Pro 17 from 2008 up to 2015. Individual 2012 to 2015 models require a Magsafe to Magsafe 2 adapter.
